How to Insulate Your Attic

With the new year comes the winter chill and homeowners are starting to feel the pressure of rising heating bills. H & S Roofing and Gutters has you covered.

If your home has an unfinished attic, one of the simplest ways to control your heating bill is to insulate your attic. A properly insulated attic can shave off anywhere from 10 to 50 percent off your heating bill, according to the Department of Energy. The effect is the same in the summertime - insulation will steady your home’s temperature, whether it’s hot or cold.

Adding the fiberglass insulation underneath your attic’s plywood floor, but on top of the old insulation, will help in the insulation process of your home.

Unless your attic has irregular joist spacing or obstructions to work around, blanket insulation is your best bet for a quick, less intensive installation. Blanket insulation can be trimmed to fit around any small obstruction and joist spacing. Your attic’s square footage should be measured to determine how much blanket insulation you need to purchase. We suggest you calculate the number of rolls you need by basing it on the width and length of the product you are using. Always buy one more than you think you need. You don’t want to run out and it’s always good to have a spare.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call H & S Roofing and Gutters.
