The holidays are almost here and it seems everyone is scrambling to ensure their houses are decorated inside and out before all the family arrives. Now, before you pull a Clark Griswald and grab your staple gun and ladder and hit the roof, there are a few things you should know to hang your holiday lights safely.
Read on for three tips on how to hang holiday lights on your roof safely.
1. Ensure Your Ladder is Secure
When setting up your ladder to hang your lights, it’s best to have someone help you by holding the ladder to the ground. However, if you don’t have a helping hand, use cords or rope to secure your ladder to your home and to prevent it from shifting.
2. Avoid Using Nails
Did you know that if you use nails to attach your holiday lights to your house that you could be damaging your roof, siding or fascia? This damage could then cause roof leaks. Rather than using nails, you should use materials that clip or hook to your eaves or gutters. These solutions are inexpensive and safer to use on your roof.

3. Test Your Breakers
Once all your lights have been attached to your roof, it’s important to test them to ensure they don’t trip. If your lights are tripping your breaker, then you probably have too many plugged into one source and this could potentially cause a house fire. To prevent tripping, make sure your holiday lights are evenly distributed among outlets.
