It’s finally time for your new roof to be installed! You’ve researched contractors for weeks, you finally settled on a company, and now you’re trying to figure out what to expect when your home gets its roof repair or replacement.

To make the process as easy as possible for both you and the roofing contractor, the following are some of the situations that you can expect to encounter during the shingle installation on your home.

Understand your home is a construction site

This might seem like it’s a no-brainer, but it’s often forgotten. While your home is undergoing a new shingle installation, its should be considered a construction site and needs to be treated as such.

This means that while the contractors are working, they will need access to your driveway and yard so that they can get as close to your home, and your home’s roof, as possible. You can help the roofers out by parking your cars either in the garage or out on the street.

Also, any items around the perimeter of the house that could get in the way, such as trash cans, garden hoses, lawn furniture, etc. should be temporarily moved.

Take extra precautions to keep everyone safe

It is also necessary to recognize that your home is a temporary construction site. Therefore, it is important that you take any and all precautions to keep everyone safe. Tools, nails, ladders and debris will all be found around your home during the install process. That means that it will not be safe for children or pets to be outside during the work in progress.

A thorough clean-up will be conducted at the end of each day, and at the end of the project, to find and remove any miscellaneous items such as nails and debris, but your yard might not be totally clean until your installer has done his final cleanup. Even then, nails previously lodged in bushes or hidden under mulch can appear later. It’s wise to do your own check around your house for several weeks after your intall.

It will be noisy

From contractors hammering on your roof, to moving ladders, tools and shingles, to walking across your roof, it’s going to be noisy at your home. If you have small children who will need naps throughout the day, it might be best for them to stay with grandparents, or go to daycare, while work is being conducted.

If you have pets that get nervous with loud noises, investigate a doggy daycare, or see if a friend wouldn’t mind watching them for the day.
